Should Governments Enforce Food Laws to Improve Individual's Health Status?
Today, the issue of public health is fast becoming very urgent. As regards this, some propose that governments should enforce food choice and nutrition in a view to improving people's health status. Others argue that this issue is an individual's responsibility, and no concern of the government. Personally, I believe 'food choice' is a personal issue.
Multitudes of people are bedevilled by chronic aliments resulting from constant intake of unwholesome meals, such as obesity. Nevertheless, the situation could be curtailed to a reasonable degree.
In order that this issue maybe addressed effectively, I suppose individuals have a major role to play. They are shouldered with the sole responsibility of making the right food choice. They are aware of their allergies or aversion to certain meals; hence their consumption of specific meals as enforced by the government's may be inimical to their health.
Though individuals, due to their tight daily schedules or no work _life balance, may continuously subject themselves to food that may have pernicious effects on their health and well being, the governments' interference in their choice of food may be an infraction of their rights and a breach of the constitution. When laws guiding the consumption of food are executed, individuals may feel compelled to comply with them; however, this is not the best solution.
In conclusion, I opine that individuals should be responsible for making their food choices themselves. Also, in order to help people maintain good eating habits, the government has a partial responsibility in this. They should frequently organise series of programmes tailored towards sensitizing people on the importance of healthy and wholesome diet. Besides, governments should ensure that organisations and companies, most especially where employees have to work beyond standard business hours, should provide workers with nutritious meals at work in order to inhibit their constant intake of fast food and junks, which are high in calories; therefore, unsafe for consumption. In addition, governments should prohibit the sales of expired products and counterfeit or fake drugs as a means of improving people's well being. If these actions are taken, people's health status will be improved.
