The Importance of Higher Education in the Society
Some people believe students in the institute of higher learning should fully fund their studies themselves due to the fact that advanced learning only benefits them, and not the society. I personally do not think this is the case, therefore , I strongly disagree to this proposition.
Modules taught in the universities, I would say, are voluminuous; however, more explanatory and comprehensive version of the secondary schools' curricula. In Nigeria, for instance, students are taught different laws and principles to become scholars, physicists and scientists without having an insight into how the laws work in reality. The universities, on the contrary, provide them with a wide variety of modules, and lots of seminars, presentations and workshops that are tailored to help them gain more expertise in a specific area or field. These higher institutes of learning, without doubts, are microcosm of the larger society because they focus more on practical, rather than theoretical aspects of learning. Therefore, a child is able to develop a broader knowledge of whatever profession he aspires to become. The institution renders students well grounded and highly competent in their various fields. It prepares them to become the future doctors, engineers, lawyers, agriculturists, accountants and so on. Thus, their impact on the society cannot be overemphasized.
Therefore, I would opine that the government should provide more opportunities for students to attain higher education in order that they may have a brilliant command of their desired fields. Scores of students are unable to pursue an advanced learning after their secondary school, owing to their financial instability. Some even drop out of schools as a result of their inability to further fund their tuition fees. Hence, I suggest the government provide them with fully _ funded or partial scholarships to help cover their tuition fees as well as other miscellaneous expenses in the course of their learning. Undeniably, this would contribute tremendously to the betterment and survival of our society and the nation at large.
