Literature and the Internet as Media for Understanding Cultures of the Universe
In a world with diverse cultures and traditions, many opine that it is required of people to migrate to other countries to gain some knowledge about other cultures. In contrast, some strongly believe that this is not necessary, as the existence of materials such as books, films and even the Internet, could serve as media for exploring and appreciating various ways of lives of people across the globe. While there could be reasons for the former, I strongly agree to the latter opinion for a few reasons.
Radically, the world has revolutionised over the years due to the existence and advancement of technology. Humans' activities have become more flexible and efficient than ever before. I the contemporary world we are, unlike in the past few decades, where there were no flexible means of getting information, it may be a waste of time and resources to travel from a country to another with the motive of understanding the way they live and what their norms and values are, when the world had dramatically transformed beyond what we could have ever imagined decades back.
On the contrary, oral and written forms of Literature, as the caricature of life; a reflection and microcosm of the larger society, has been a major instrument deployed by man in appreciating other cultures across the globe. Books and plays as forms of Literature help people understand perspectives of peoples from different walks of life. For example, Indian movies, American and even Korea which are now prevalent in Nigeria, have exposed Nigerians to traditions that totally differ from theirs. Now, a Nigerian youth can easily describe how a typical market in India looks like, how the government operates in Korea, and even how a wedding ceremony is being held in India. In addition, the Internet has enabled globalisation over the years as its Language is the 'lingua franca' -the language of the universe. Now, everyone could easily surf the Internet to gain more insight into the cultures of the universe, and get credible, accurate information or feedback in a language clearly understood by him.
In conclusion, the aforementioned have clearly justified my opinion that other cultures can be well understood via various forms of Literature, as well as the Internet, rather than migrate to countries for this very motive.
