Why Do People Have to Do Jobs Which They Hate?
In recent times, a relatively large number of people are seen doing jobs they do not like or have the passion for. This is a rising case in most under - developed countries; for example, in Nigeria, where there are inadequate job opportunities for the youths.
However, regardless of the fatally flawed economy of the country, people need to earn a means of livelihood, most importantly, a legitimate one _ fathers need to cater for their family's needs and sons have to care for their aged/old parents; therefore, there is a dire need for them to resort to any jobs, petty or menial, or work in some organisation with any available positions or openings. This is not simply because they have the grit and zeal towards what they do, or have the talent and potentials for it, but because they need to have the basic needs of life_ they need to pass through life.
It is no news that most employees who hold specific official positions do not have the qualifications for the posts; for example, one who studied Food Technology could, oddly enough, be found in a financial institution. Such person definitely wasn't trained to work in the banking field, hence, had no inclination towards such profession. Nonetheless, he had to get himself any available job, irrespective of its nature.
Similarly, most people doing menial jobs are graduates with impressive CGPA from highly reputable institutions. But due to the high incidence of unemployment in the country, they are subjected to take up petty jobs; regardless of how mediocre or demeaning they are. For instance, there are multitudes of graduates who work as labourers on building sites, farms, factories, etc. Despite how arduous these jobs are or how meagre the pay is, these people take them up in order to be able to go through life.
However, all this poses a far - reaching effect on the country. It remains one of the reasons for the persistent retardation in the development of the country. When people take up jobs/positions they dislike or have no ability for, there is going to be a constant record of low productivity and inefficiency in various sectors of the economy. These set of people will not be highly capable or effective at whatever task they are saddled with due to their listlessness towards the positions or their inability to discharge their duties competently.
In this regard, there has been much controversy arising from people's agitation over the eradication of the employment of unqualified staff in organisations. But the questions that are still left unanswered are: "If organisations refuse to employ unqualified employees, is this going to be a positive change or a negative one?" "Whilst fostering efficiency and productivity in the country, will this likely pose a threat to all?" "Is this going to be disadvantageous for all?"
