Inculcating Ethical Behavior in Children

It is vital to instill moral, ethical behaviour in children at a very young age. The reason is that  children tend to adapt quickly to their immediate environment. In addition, they are usually influenced by whatever practices they get exposed to in their early stage of life. Hence, they quickly imbibe the ways of life familiar to them. So if parents and teachers do not do so well at clearly showing these children the difference between right and wrong by enjoining good practices and forbidding evil, they are prone to misconduct and abberant behaviour.

In what ways should parents inculcate good manners in children? Do parents necessarily need to punish children, likewise the teachers, in order to enhance their good conduct?

From my perspective, I feel there are more judicious ways to teach morals to children than ' punishing them'. Parents and teachers could adopt 'positive' measures rather than  'negative'. A good example of a positive measure is when a parent tells a child not to watch tv unless  he completes his assignment. In the same manner, a teacher could offer to buy a student lunch if he does better in his exams_  this might be a liason between the teacher and the child's parent, with the parents being the one to set the bills.

Undoubtedly, all these are positive techniques that could help mitigate a child's misdemeanours in the society.

However, on rare occasions, punishment could be given, especially in the case of obstinate, belligerent kids. But parents should take cognizance of the fact that severe punishment hardens the minds of children, and may facilitate their aggressiveness and cruelty rather than abate it.

Punishments such as depriving children of their meals or allowance should be avoided as this may culminate into children stealing or picking pockets in the streets.

All should always be cautious of how to bring up children in the best of ways, which is why parenting is quite an arduous task that requires a lot of effort and wisdom.
