The Lingua Franca as a Threat to the Indigenous Languages

It is undisputable that English Language as a subject is a very sacrosanct one to be offered in all schools. The importance of the language cannot be overemphasized of course. It has gained much recognition through the years. It is a lingua franca _ a global language, which  breaches language barriers across continents, hence it has remained a very crucial subject that cannot be abrogated. However, the existence of English Language should not be a threat to our local languages. Our indigenous languages form one of the groundworks of our culture; therefore, we should appreciate and preserve this by showing regards for our languages in all ways. Thus, rather than children being exposed to more of the target language, they should be given the opportunity to explore their local languages too. How does this work?  I think, in a view to preserving our local languages, we should learn to use them more often in our day to day communication.  Trotting out the old cliché: "If you d...

The Importance of Owning One's House

Having one’s house is very crucial for people in some countries rather than renting an apartment, the reason being that they do not want to subject themselves to the various issues that lie in renting an apartment; such problems like lack of adequate privacy, obnoxious or nosy neighbours and even tantrums thrown by house owners. For example, in a country like Nigeria, people want to possess a house of theirs, most especially, when they can afford such project at a particular point in their life. Considering the fact that, though financially draining, owning a house of one is a big, long-term asset; everyone is on the pursuit of having at least a small, cosy abode for refuge. Besides, there is  no greater comfort than enjoying one's privacy to the fullest without someone prying into one's affairs. More soothing is the fact that people do not have to worry about having to pay a specific rent fee on a monthly/yearly basis prior to a given deadline. By comparison, renting an apartm...

Inculcating Ethical Behavior in Children

It is vital to instill moral, ethical behaviour in children at a very young age. The reason is that  children tend to adapt quickly to their immediate environment. In addition, they are usually influenced by whatever practices they get exposed to in their early stage of life. Hence, they quickly imbibe the ways of life familiar to them. So if parents and teachers do not do so well at clearly showing these children the difference between right and wrong by enjoining good practices and forbidding evil, they are prone to misconduct and abberant behaviour. In what ways should parents inculcate good manners in children? Do parents necessarily need to punish children, likewise the teachers, in order to enhance their good conduct? From my perspective, I feel there are more judicious ways to teach morals to children than ' punishing them'. Parents and teachers could adopt 'positive' measures rather than  'negative'. A good example of a positive measure is when a parent ...

Why Do People Have to Do Jobs Which They Hate?

In recent times, a relatively large number of people are seen doing jobs they do not like or have the passion for. This is a rising case in most under - developed countries; for example, in Nigeria, where there are inadequate job opportunities for the youths.  However, regardless of the fatally flawed economy of the country, people need to earn a means of livelihood, most importantly, a legitimate one _ fathers need to cater for their family's needs and sons have to care for their aged/old parents; therefore, there is a dire need for them to resort to any jobs, petty or menial, or work in some organisation with any available positions or openings. This is not simply because they have the grit and zeal towards what they do, or have the talent and potentials for it, but because they need to have the basic needs of life_ they need to pass through life. It is no news that most employees who hold specific official positions do not have the qualifications for the posts; for example, one ...

Living in a Country Where One Has to Speak a Foreign Language

Residing in a country whose spoken, native language is quite different from one's is usually a 'tough row to hoe', the reason being that there is a pressing need to be able to comprehend and speak such language, if not fluently, to a certain extent. The inability to understand such language may pose a social challenge and a practical problem because of a few reasons. Firstly, language being a tool for communication, that is peculiar to a particular group of people or community, plays an important role in fostering peace and mitigating hostility amongst all across the globe. Being an immigrant in a country with a different language can affect one's relationship with the citizens of such country. This could bring about loneliness and seclusion because it makes it hard to affiliate, interact and socialise freely with them. A good example is the case of a Nigerian who travelled to France to stay with his brother. Having resided there for a few years, he recounted how it had...
